Blocul Adriatica

Blocul Adriatica, langa vechea cladire a Teatrului National

Ca stii, continua povestea, avea o garsoniera foarte cocheta in blocul Adriatica, fiind ea contabila.
In fine, a trecut si cununia religioasa, iar dupa vreo doi - trei ani am avut ocazia sa ii cunosc.
Or fi avut copii si si i-or fi crescut in frica lui Dumnezeu?
Eram de acum in liceu, si aveam colegi care locuiau in blocul Wilson.
In fiecare dimineata luam autobuzul 300 ca sa merg la serviciu, statia era chiar in fata blocului. As simple as that!
Mi-a dat cateva variante.
Seara el intorcandu-se fericit acasa si spunandu-i nevestei, hei, viata e frumoasa! Si spunandu-i asta in fiecare seara timp de vreo doua saptamani?

Filmul are cel putin doi interpreti extraordinari -Erland Josephson si Lena Endre.

Batranul Begman a iubit candva?

El? Sau ea, de fapt?

Ca orice film mare, nu ne impune raspunsurile, ci ni le lasa noua in seama.

A Czech Movie with Unknown Title

Josef Sudek - Still Life

I saw long time ago a Czech movie that was extraordinary. I think it was made in the sixties or seventies.

Unfortunately I don't know the title - I don't know the director, either. I watched it on TV sometime in the 80's. It was a Saturday night, I was visiting some friends - the movie was on a Bulgarian channel, so it was dubbed in Bulgarian. The original soundtrack was still audible, Czech and Bulgarian words were flowing together. None of us knew Czech or Bulgarian, only a bit of Russian, which could have helped, maybe. Fortunately for us, there were English subtitles.

I thought it was a movie by Forman - however it seems that it is made by another Czech filmmaker. I did a search on the imdb, with no luck at all.

It is about a group of very old people, living in a small town - they prepare the celebration of 50 or 60 years since high school graduation.

As they are very old, there are all kind of comic situations. Four of them prepare a piece of chamber music for the event, only each one has his own habits, his own ideas... One of these folks is a difficult person, always giving hard time to the others.

Actually he hopes to meet at the celebration his love from the high school years. He had got married with another girl - and life went on, not particularly bad, while not particularly happy, either. And he would like to see his old girlfriend - he does not know very well what he would say to her, but he hopes somehow that a kind of miracle would take place, and his life would find suddenly a sense.

The day of the event comes - only the old flame is no more - she had died a couple of months ago.

Our fellow leaves the party, as he does not want his tears to be seen. One of the other classmates comes and hugs him, let's have some fun - let's dance and sing in the park, barefoot.

But the militiaman can give us a fine!

He will not, come on. Let's do it!

And, yes, the miracle takes place - the old nasty guy starts to smile.

And meanwhile I found the title! I asked on imdb and I got this response:

It is a legendary Czech TV film from 1980 called Nezralé maliny (Unripe raspberries), directed by Frantisek Filip and written by Jirí Hubac. It´s a real jewel among tv works of that time. Information about it is unfortunately very rare anywhere.

Ryszard Kapuscinski a incetat din viata

Ryszard Kapuscinski

Am citit si Imperium - acolo e mare jurnalist, si are pagini geniale cand uita ca e jurnalist.

Am gasit The Soccer War la Politics & Prose ...

Dumnezu sa il odihneasca.

Crazy Love

Linda and Burt Pugach in 1977. He spent 14 years in prison for having lye thrown in her face.
(Click here for the Romanian version)

I love New York because it’s crazy like nowhere else. Unique in so many respects. Ugly while refined – in New York refinement and ugliness are co-dependent.

But sometimes New York can be just a small place with common people like everywhere else. Only, as it happens, ordinary people hide within themselves extraordinary stories. To discover their stories, one needs a bit of insight, a bit of empathy. This is the New York searched by the documentaries of Dan Klores. His last one is Crazy Love.

A married couple. The photo above is from 1977. Now he is in his seventies, she is ten years less. She kept her beauty and he could say about her,

She’s got a fine sense of humor when I’m feeling low down
And when I come to her when the sun goes down

(I’d like to thank Deborah, my colleague on a yahoo forum - Vorbe si Palavre - Words and Chatters - for signaling me the song of Van Morrison, Crazy Love, that I quote here)

Their liaison started in the 50’s. He was 32 years old, she was 21. And he was crazy for her...

Burt Pugach and Linda Riss, here in 1957.
I can hear her heart beat for a thousand miles
And the heavens open every time she smiles
And when I come to her that’s where I belong
Yet I’m running to her like a river's song

There was however an issue – he was married by that time.

He promised her to divorce his wife. Only, as you know, men are always very easy in making promises, much slower to fulfill them. So, after a while, she got tired and decided to break the affair. He got crazy and started to stalk her – eventually, in a moment of totally craziness, he threw lye on her face, leaving her blind.

He was condemned for this crime and spent the next 14 years in prison.

During these 14 years he kept on sending her letters, asking for forgiveness, and declaring his love. He was released in 1974. They got married in the same year.

Man, wait a little, what's with this crazy story? What's so extraordinary? Well, I think this is a very straight story about the savage hidden in our inner - the savage civilized self.

And it tells us also something very fearful about co-dependence - between prey and predator. And this is New York actually - ask any inhabitant there - New York is prey and predator living in co-dependence.

Doua romane de Valentin Rasputin

Valentin Rasputin
Ar fi ajuns in doua zile.
I-a dat de stire sotiei. Ea l-a considerat vinovat.
A ramas gravida. Incurcata treaba!
Ea a tacut, incrancenata.

Hillary enters the race

Hillary Clinton
(Click here for the Romanian version)
I'm in and I'm in to win - Sen. Hillary Clinton entered officially the race. Today's Washington Post has a large article on the subject, Hillary Clinton Opens Presidential Bid.
I do not think she has exactly the same political views as her husband. The champion of the centrist approach is the governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson, also expected to enter the race very soon.
While I was writing this post, Governor Richardson made his announcement. Asked how he can compete with nationally known candidates such as Clinton and Obama, Richardson said: I'll outwork them.
Of course, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have much stronger positions within the Democratic Party. I read today an op-ed in W. Post by E. J. Dionne Jr. - he makes an interesting comparison between the two main contenders in the Democratic race. Says he, the most important difference lies in where their respective political journeys began. While Hillary Clinton belongs to the top tier of the Democratic Party, Barack Obama started his political life as a community organizer in Chicago. This gave him a kind of a bottom-up perspective: his ideas were shaped by his grass-roots background, much rather than by the political machine of the party.

Art Buchwald passed away

Art Buchwald

(click here for the Romanian version)

Every time you think television has hit its lowest ebb, a new program comes along to make you wonder where you thought the ebb was.
My friends were just arguing today about TV policies, and I am sure he would have been fine among us.
If you attack the establishment long enough and hard enough, they will make you a member of it.
He remained untamed.
After many years spent as a correspondent in Paris, he returned to the US capital. He was now supposed to follow closely the events on the Capitol Hill - only his natural environment would have been Paris, so his next title was I chose the Capital Punishment.
Just when you think there's nothing to write about, Nixon says, "I am not a crook." Jimmy Carter says, "I have lusted after women in my heart." President Reagan says, "I have just taken a urinalysis test, and I am not on dope.
They admired him while fearing him, presidents after presidents, senators after senators - and we have always waited for his op-eds in the New York Herald Tribune - here in Romania they were reproduced by Lumea - there is a book by Felicia Antip, Lumea din ziare, that describes the struggle of a few Romanian journalists to keep the public informed.
Then the New York Herald Tribune went out of business, and something unique happened: two other major journals, New York Times and Washington Post, made possible a European edition, the International Herald Tribune, so the op-eds of Art Buchwald went on.
You can't make up anything anymore. The world itself is a satire. All you're doing is recording it.
Art Buchwald passed away.

Eram in universul lui Edgar Allan Poe.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.`
'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore -
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore -
Nameless here for evermore.

Gindul, vai, ma mai petrece spre acel Dechemvre rece
Cind taciunii pareau stafii alungite pe covor.
Zorii-i asteptam cu sete: nici un tom vreun leac nu-mi dete
Ca sa uit de moartea fetei, careia-i spuneau Lenore
Insisi ingerii - frumoasa, luminoasa mea Lenore,
Dusa-n vecii vecilor!

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating`
'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door -
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; -
This it is, and nothing more,

Purpuriile perdele, cu fosninde catifele,
Ma faceau, ca niciodata, in adinc sa ma-nfior,
Incit repetam intr-una, pentru-a potoli furtuna
Inimii, zvicnind nebuna: „E vreun oaspe doritor

I remember him as if it were yesterday, as he came plodding to the inn door, his sea-chest following behind him in a hand-barrow – a tall, strong, heavy, nut-brown man, his tarry pigtail falling over his shoulders of his soiled blue coat...

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
`Sir,' said I, `or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you'
- here I opened wide the door; -
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Cind mi-am mai venit in fire, spus-am fara sovaire:
Somnul imi dadea tircoale, cind bataia dumitale

Am gasit o editie in limba engleza a lui Paul Celan.

Don't tell Mama, I'm for Obama

Don't tell Mama, I'm for Obama
(click here for the Romanian version)

Will be Barack Obama the next American president? Why not? Well, but he's far too young, you'll say. He'll be only 47 in 2008. And he's been in the US Senate only for two years. To say nothing that America could not be yet quite ready for an African-American president.

And this is not all. Actually Barack Obama is hundred percent unconventional. Dems and Republicans are in a cultural war while Mr. Obama does not seem to be interested too much in it. It's like he'd realize that the issues in the cultural war of the elite were not the real issues of the American society.

It's not just hazard that the Kosacks and other bloggers are not particularly enthusiastic about Mr. Obama. He's not a radical, rather a centrist, anyway a moderate, with constructive and very balanced approaches.

Well, I believe the great atout of Barack Obama is just the lack of traditional atouts. He is the totally unconventional candidate. And it could be that in 2008 the American society would be in need just for a total unconventional guy. Remember Jimmy Carter.

For some months the question was whether Barack Obama would take his risks or not. Some were recommending him to wait till 2012, some others were telling him to target rather the vice presidential position, making team with Hillary Clinton. And there were some worried that the Dems would loose their chances with Mr. Obama. That Dems were driving the wrong horse with Mr. Obama, so to speak.

Well, there were too much advisers in town, so Barack Obama decided to do what his guts (read political instincts) were telling him to do. He announced his first step in the electoral race, the exploratory committee. And the final decision will be taken on February 10th. Quite a mensch, isn't it?

Gestul de barbat al lui Obama

Barack Obama intr-o fotograife total neconventionala
(click here for the English version)

In istoria Americii a mai existat cazul unui candidat total neconventional care a devenit presedinte in pofida oricaror prognoze politice.

Este un prim pas in angajarea in cursa electorala.

Circula o vorba zilele astea prin Partidul Democrat, Don't tell Mama, I'm for Obama.

Stalingrad

Oameni nici buni, nici rai, oameni si atat.

Recurrent Dreams

Still Life from the Studio of Josef Sudek

(click here for the Romanian version)

My repetitive dream: living the real life in Bucharest. I just woke up, Bucharest is far away. Saturday morning. Incredible weather for January: over sixty degrees! Bucharest is far away, only weather is the same there – I just called.

It’s time for some hiking. Where to go? Anyway, some place up the Potomac border. To Brookmont maybe? And then to descend some steps on the Valley Road towards Little Falls? Or to the Glen Echo Park? Then I’d descend on the border beyond the Sycamore Island. Or even up to Cabin John Bridge? It used to be there the terminus stop for the old street car, linking these villages to Georgetown. The street car stopped running back in the eighties, now you can hardly see its trace here and there along Potomac Avenue.

I prepare hastily some snacks, throw them in my backpack, then run to take the metro from Vienna. Virginian Vienna, in the Greater DC area.

Austrian Vienna … Living in the Communist paradise and dreaming at normality …. Vienna was our closest dream. Someone was telling me, that morning when I arrived at Vienna, as I get off the train, from the station platform you could see the whole city. I breathed deeply the air; it smelled like freedom. Suddenly life deserved to be lived. It was back in the seventies.

I took a book in the backpack. I’ve read it, only it’s hard to leave. A Romanian book, by Felicia Antip, Aventuri ale constiintei de sine. A book speaking about books speaking themselves about imaginary books. The world of Felicia Antip – a universe of universes … the world of recurrent dreams.

A joyful, noisy group steps in. Two families, husbands, wives, kids. They speak seemingly Greek, seemingly Spanish. I ask them, are you Brazilians? Yes, comes their reply, and where are you from? Romania, I say. They look at me joyfully surprised.

At Metro Center I switch trains, I’m going to Bethesda.

Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had… the text from the Gospel according to John, on an iron plate in front of the large bookstore in Bethesda.

Only I don’t want to go to that bookstore, it is another one, a small one, of used books, the books to be found everywhere on the shelves and on the floor. This bookshop used to be in Georgetown. They moved to Bethesda, only they kept their name, Georgetown Bookshop. It’s the place where I discovered Sudek, the great photographer from Prague, famous between the two world wars.

And it is the place where I met again Boris Pilniak. I had left him in the pages of a book by Alexandru Sahia, an edition printed in the thirties – Stalin would send him to disappear in the Gulag, then Pilniak disappeared also from the other editions of Sahia’s book, as they were printed after 1944. Now Pilniak is here, at the Georgetown Bookshop in Bethesda.

Josef Sudek, the photographer who lived in Prague – an eggshell, a pin, a leaf, something that’s looking as the shape of an old book – Sudek took banal objects and pulled out grains of sky.

And a bit further, also on the floor, an album with the churches of Kremlin. Blagoveshtcenskii Sobor among them, with the iconostasis painted partly by Rubliov, partly by Feofan Grek. I remember the day when I was there to look at Rubliov’s icons. It was an afternoon, the other excursionists went to the Museum for Oriental Art, only I chose to come again to the Kremlin, to see Blagoveshtcenskii Sobor, and the iconostasis. A small cathedral, very well balanced – it used to be the imperial chapel in the very old times. The icons of Rubliov, with their incredible blue, and their incredible grace. One day before I had been at Tretiakov, to find the icon section there closed for a perpetual renovation. So now, at Blagoveshtcenskii Sobor it was my first meeting with Rubliov’s art face to face. The first and the last encounter – I would meet Rubliov after that only in albums.

I bought from that bookshop some time ago an album with icons by Omiros - a Greek-American contemporary painter, who is trying to revive Byzantine art, using a non-figurative approach. His saints are guessed shapes, among grains of tears.

Only this bookshop is today closed, and the windows are filled with thick paper. I enter the hair design saloon nearby and ask the cashier what happened. She says, I think he knows, and shows me one of the hair dressers, an old guy with a very gentle approach. He comes to me smiling, how nice to see you again. Have you come on purpose, or just to say to me hi?

I am a bit puzzled, I think you are making a confusion. We haven’t met before, except if you come from Romania.

No, not from Romania. Are you born there? he asks me.

No, in Paris, it’s a bit complicated And you?

I’m born in Germany.

Well, so we don’t really know each other. Actually I came to ask you about the bookshop.

Oh, what a pity! They closed it, now it’s only on the web. What a pity, there were so many folks coming and spending hours among the books, what a pity! I feel so sorry for you.

He seems to me as a hero who has just descended from the novels of Gustav Meyrink.

Many years ago, in Beijing, as I was in front of a shopkeeper, he started the conversation exactly the same, how nice to see you again!

I’m afraid you confuse me. I’m coming here for the first time in my life.

Then your face reminds me of someone else… Mr. Dan came today here, such a nice gentleman! But you all, Romanian gentlemen, are very nice.

How do you know that I am a Romanian?

Oh, I am pretty sure that you came here before.

I am now far from Bethesda, in the woods. I don’t know yet where my destination will be. A tourist post warns me suddenly with its arrow: 10,000 Km to Luxor. That’s okay, at least I know now where I am.

They left the Episcopal Church

A Christmas Eve service at The Falls Church. (Gerald Martineau -- The Washington Post)

Recently nine parishes from the Arlington County decided to leave the Episcopal Church and to place themselves under the authority of Archbishop Akinola, the Anglican Primate of Nigeria. It is a dramatic episode in the conflict between traditionalists and progressives within the Episcopal Church. In today's Washington Post, Reverend John Yates and Os Guiness (the rector and a parishioner from one of these parishes) explain their decision in an article entitled Why We Left the Episcopal Church. I think it is important to know the positions of both sides. Here it goes for the traditionalists:

When even President Gerald Ford's funeral at Washington National Cathedral is not exempt from comment about the crisis in the Episcopal Church, we believe it is time to set the record straight as to why our church and so many others around the country have severed ties with the Episcopal Church. Fundamental to a liberal view of freedom is the right of a person or group to define themselves, to speak for themselves and to not be dehumanized by the definitions and distortions of others. This right we request even of those who differ from us.
The core issue in why we left is not women's leadership. It is not "Episcopalians against equality," as the headline on a
recent Post op-ed by Harold Meyerson put it. It is not a "leftward" drift in the church. It is not even primarily ethical -- though the ordination of a practicing homosexual as bishop was the flash point that showed how far the repudiation of Christian orthodoxy had gone.
The core issue for us is theological: the intellectual integrity of faith in the modern world. It is thus a matter of faithfulness to the lordship of Jesus, whom we worship and follow. The American Episcopal Church no longer believes the historic, orthodox Christian faith common to all believers. Some leaders expressly deny the central articles of the faith -- saying that traditional theism is "dead," the incarnation is "nonsense," the resurrection of Jesus is a fiction, the understanding of the cross is "a barbarous idea," the Bible is "pure propaganda" and so on. Others simply say the creed as poetry or with their fingers crossed.
It would be easy to parody the "Alice in Wonderland" surrealism of Episcopal leaders openly denying what their faith once believed, celebrating what Christians have gone to the stake to resist -- and still staying on as leaders. But this is a serious matter.
First, Episcopal revisionism abandons the fidelity of faith. The Hebrew scriptures link matters of truth to a relationship with God. They speak of apostasy as adultery -- a form of betrayal as treacherous as a husband cheating on his wife.
Second, Episcopal revisionism negates the authority of faith. The "sola scriptura" ("by the scriptures alone") doctrine of the Reformation church has been abandoned for the "sola cultura" (by the culture alone) way of the modern church. No longer under authority, the Episcopal Church today is either its own authority or finds its authority in the shifting winds of intellectual and social fashion -- which is to say it has no authority.
Third, Episcopal revisionism severs the continuity of faith. Cutting itself off from the universal faith that spans the centuries and the continents, it becomes culturally captive to one culture and one time. While professing tolerance and inclusiveness, certain Episcopal attitudes toward fellow believers around the world, who make up a majority of the Anglican family, have been arrogant and even racist.
Fourth, Episcopal revisionism destroys the credibility of faith. There is so little that is distinctively Christian left in the theology of some Episcopal leaders, such as the former bishop of Newark, that a skeptic can say, as Oscar Wilde said to a cleric of his time, "I not only follow you, I precede you." It is no accident that orthodox churches are growing and that almost all the great converts to the Christian faith in the past century, such as G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis, have been attracted to full-blooded orthodoxy, not to revisionism. The prospect for the Episcopal Church, already evident in many dioceses, is inevitable withering and decline.
Fifth, Episcopal revisionism obliterates the very identity of faith. When the great truths of the Bible and the creeds are abandoned and there is no limit to what can be believed in their place, then the point is reached when there is little identifiably Christian in Episcopal revisionism. Would that Episcopal leaders showed the same zeal for their faith that they do for their property. If the present decline continues, all that will remain of a once strong church will be empty buildings, kept going by the finances, though not the faith, of the fathers.
These are the outrages we protest. These are the infidelities that drive us to separate. These are the real issues to be debated. We remain Anglicans but leave the Episcopal Church because the Episcopal Church first left the historic faith. Like our spiritual forebears in the Reformation, "Here we stand. So help us God. We can do no other."

And here is the position of the other side, those who remain Episcopalians (as explained by Harold Meyerson in the Washington Post from December 20th):

Don't look now, but Virginia is seceding again.
On Sunday nine Episcopal parishes in Virginia, including the one where George Washington served as a vestryman, announced that they had voted to up and leave the U.S. Episcopal Church to protest its increasingly equal treatment of homosexuals.
In 2003 an overwhelming majority of the nation's Episcopal bishops ratified the selection of a gay bishop by the New Hampshire diocese. This past June the church's general convention elevated Nevada Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori to the post of presiding U.S. bishop. Jefferts Schori is the first woman to head a national branch of the Anglican Church. Worse yet, she has allowed the blessing of same-sex couples within her diocese (which includes the ever theologically innovative Las Vegas).
Whether it was the thought of a woman presiding over God's own country club or of gays snuggling under its eaves, it was all too much for a distinct minority of Episcopalians. The dissident parishes in the Virginia diocese contain only about 5 percent of the state's parishioners. But it's the church the defectors have latched on to that makes this schism news.
In slamming the door on their American co-religionists, the two largest parishes, which are in Fairfax City and Falls Church, also announced their affiliation with the Episcopal Church of Nigeria. The presiding Nigerian archbishop, Peter Akinola, promotes legislation in his country that would forbid gays and lesbians to form organizations or to eat together in restaurants and that would send them to jail for indulging in same-gender sexual activity. Akinola's agenda so touched the hearts of the Northern Virginia faithful that they anointed him, rather than Jefferts Schori, as their bishop.
Peer pressure played a role, too. Explaining the decision to leave the American church, Vicki Robb, a Fairfax parishioner and Alexandria public relations exec,
told The Post's Bill Turque and Michelle Boorstein that the church's leftward drift has made it "kind of embarrassing when you tell people that you're Episcopal." It must be a relief to finally have an archbishop who doesn't pussyfoot around when gays threaten to dine in public.
The alliance of the Fairfax Phobics with Archbishop Restaurant Monitor is just the latest chapter in the global revolt against modernity and equality and, more specifically, in the formation of the Orthodox International. The OI unites frequently fundamentalist believers of often opposed faiths in common fear and loathing of challenges to ancient tribal norms. It has featured such moving tableaus as the coming together in the spring of 2005 of Israel's chief rabbis, the deputy mufti of Jerusalem, and leaders of Catholic and Armenian churches, burying ancient enmities to jointly condemn a gay pride festival. The OI's founding father was none other than Pope John Paul II, who spent much time and energy endeavoring to reconcile various orthodox Christian religions and whose ecumenism prompted him to warn the Anglicans not to ordain gay priests.
John Paul also sought to build his church in nations of the developing world where traditional morality and bigotry, most especially on matters sexual, were in greater supply than in secular Europe and the increasingly egalitarian United States, and more in sync with the Catholic Church's inimitable backwardness. Now America's schismatic Episcopalians are following in his footsteps -- traditionalists of the two great Western hierarchical Christian churches searching the globe for sufficiently benighted bishops.
In recent years Anglican churches have experienced their greatest growth in the developing world, which could tilt the entire global Anglican Communion toward more traditionalist norms. Only 13 of the 38 national churches within the communion ordain women as priests; only three -- the United States, New Zealand and Canada -- ordain women as bishops.
The American church, by contrast, has largely paralleled the transformation of Rockefeller Republicans into liberal, Democratic secularists. The old joke of New York politicos was that Jews had the incomes of Episcopalians but voted like Puerto Ricans. Now it's the Episcopal prelates who are voting like Puerto Ricans, or, more precisely, like liberal Jews. Some traditionalists fear the church isn't really theistic anymore. The comforting middle ground of the church of yore -- affirming the equality of some, not discussing the equality of others -- has eroded as the demands of women and gays and lesbians could no longer be dismissed.
The irony is that the Episcopal Church owes its existence directly to the American Revolution; it broke away from the Church of England during the war and was reborn as a distinctly American entity between 1784 and 1789. Fully two-thirds of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were active or (like Washington) nominal Anglicans, and, having repudiated the political authority of the king of England, they could scarcely have gone on affirming his ecclesiastical authority.
The founders of the church believed, within the context of their time, that all men were created equal. Today's defectors have thought it over in the context of our own time, and decided that they're not.

Still Life from the Studio of Josef Sudek

Ma trezesc brusc din visul meu repetitiv: traind viata adevarata in Bucuresti. Ma uit in jur. Bucurestiul este foarte departe. E sambata dimineata.

Unde? O sa vad. Undeva in sus pe malul Potomacului.

S-a mutat aici, in Bethesda, dar si-a pastrat numele, Georgetown Bookshop. Acolo l-am descoperit pe Sudek, fotograful praghez, acolo l-am regasit pe Boris Pilniak. Il lasasem in paginile cartii lui Sahia din editia tiparita prin anii '30 - Stalin avea sa il trimita in Gulag, si Pilniak avea sa iasa si din edtiile urmatoare ale cartii lui Sahia, tiparite dupa 1944 ... Acum e aici, in libraria din Bethesda.

Acolo v-ati nascut?

Zic, e mai complicat, la Paris. Tot acolo si dumneavoastra?

Zice, nu, in Germania.

A Shiite-Sunni Stalingrad

George F. Will, Op-Ed Columnist at Washington Post

In the Washington Post from Sunday January 7th, George F. Will quotes Wayne White (26 years with the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, now with the Middle East Institute), speaking of today's Baghdad, imagine a third nation's army operating between -- and against -- both the German and Russian forces in Stalingrad. That might be akin to the mission of troops sent in any surge.
