Maria Iliuţ a moştenit cântecul mai întâi de la păsări şi izvoare, mică fiind păştea oile în creierul munţilor din Crasna, o localitatea ştefaniană. Frica faţă de lupi, o făcea să cânte cât era ziua de mare, crezând astfel că va speria vieţuitoarele hămesite.
