Killing Borges

(ilustración de Pacheco / El País)

¡Maten a Borges! Kill Borges! it sounds strange, isn't it? It's about the need for the Argentinian writers to go further, not to remain trapped in the Borgesian canon. This cri de guerre seemingly belongs to Witold Gombrowicz, the Polish author that spent some years in Argentine and knew a thing or two about the way the literary life was evolving in that part of the world.

Gombrowicz returned to Europe in 1963 and the Argentinian literature went further with or without killing Borges. Here is a column from El País about today's literary status there:

Brazilian film director and cinematographer, born in 1964; directed four feature films (also a couple of TV movies); 2 Sons of Francisco (2005) is the story of a poor man working hard to see his two sons becoming country music stars; that smells cheap melodrama, actually it is a simple and touching movie; Once Upon a Time in Rio (2008) navigates in the same waters as Cidade de Deus; the ocean is very large in the favelas of Rio and there are plenty of big fishes there to catch and pull out from them great stories; Along the Way (2012) is a road movie (and Brazil is big, you know), plus some past events to be exorcised, plus a man - boy story; the making of this movie started from a song obsessing Silveira; the song was Sentado à beira do caminho; Gonzaga (2012) turns again to a singer's biography (Luis Gonzaga, the king of Baião), plus the relation with his son; all this can sound too much melodrama and show, but Silveira has a genuine passion for Brazilian music and a genuine empathy for simple Brazilians, with their hard lives and big dreams; there is an interview with him in El País:

Eu não posso mais ficar aqui
A esperar!
Que um dia de repente
Você volte para mim...

Vejo caminhões
E carros apressados
A passar por mim
Estou sentado à beira
De um caminho
Que não tem mais fim...

Meu olhar se perde na poeira
Dessa estrada triste
Onde a tristeza
E a saudade de você
Ainda existe...

Esse sol que queima
No meu rosto
Um resto de esperança
De ao menos ver de perto
O seu olhar
Que eu trago na lembrança...

Preciso acabar logo com isso
Preciso lembrar que eu existo
Que eu existo, que eu existo...

Vem a chuva, molha o meu rosto
E então eu choro tanto
Minhas lágrimas
E os pingos dessa chuva
Se confundem com o meu pranto...

Olho prá mim mesmo e procuro
E não encontro nada
Sou um pobre resto de esperança
À beira de uma estrada...

Preciso acabar logo com isso
Preciso lembrar que eu existo
Que eu existo, que eu existo...

Carros, caminhões, poeira
Estrada, tudo, tudo, tudo
Se confunde em minha mente
Minha sombra me acompanha
E vê que eu
Estou morrendo lentamente...

Só você não vê que eu
Não posso mais
Ficar aqui sozinho
Esperando a vida inteira
Por você
Sentado à beira do caminho...

Preciso acabar logo com isso
Preciso lembrar que eu existo
Que eu existo, que eu existo...

Larará Larará Lararará!
Larará Larará Lararará!
Larará Larará Lararará!
Larará Larará Lararará!
Larará Larará Lararará!

I can no longer keep on here waiting
For a day in which you will suddenly come back to me
I see trucks and cars rushing in front of me
I'm sitting by a road that has no longer an end
My look is lost in the dirt in this sad road
Where I'm still sad and I still miss you
This sun that burns on my face a trace of hope
Of at least seeing from closer your look that I keep in my mind

I need to get this over with
I need to remember that I'm real

Here comes the rain, it wets my face and I cry so much
My tears and and the raindrops
Mix together with my wailing
I look at my self, try and find myself but there's nothing to be found
I'm a poor hint of hope on the roadside

I need to get this over with
I need to remember that I'm real

Cars, trucks, dust, road, everything, everything
Mix together before me
My shadow goes with me
And sees that I'm slowly dying
Only you don't see that I can't be here on my own anymore
Waiting my whole life for you, sitting on the roadside

I need to get this over with
I need to remember that I'm real

De repente a dor
De esperar terminou
E o amor veio enfim
Eu que sempre sonhei
Mas não acreditei
Muito em mim

Vi o tempo passar
O inverno chegar
Outra vez mas desta vez
Todo pranto sumiu
Um encanto surgiu
Meu amor

Você
É mais do que sei
É mais que pensei
É mais que esperava, baby

Você
É algo assim
É tudo pra mim
É como eu sonhava, baby

Sou feliz agora
Não não vá embora não
Não não não não não

Não não vá embora
...

(FINALURILE A DOUĂ ODE, BINEÎNȚELES)

Vino, noapte străveche și identică,
Noapte regină născută detronată,
Noapte aidoma înlăuntru cu tăcerea, noapte
Cu stelele paiete fugare
Pe rochia ta cu franjuri de infinit.

*

Vino agale,
Vino domol,
Toate casele albe, scoțând fum printre copaci,

*

Vino, îndurerato,
Mater-Dolorosa a neliniștilor celor timizi,
Turris-Eburnea a tristeților celor disprețuiți,
Unde se află orașele de astăzi pe care atât de mult le-am iubit;
Altă petală din mine arunc-o spre sud,
Unde sunt mările pe care descoperitorii le-au străbătut;
Pe care, fără să-l cunosc, îl ador;

I

Vem, Noite antiquíssima e idêntica,
Noite Rainha nascida destronada,
Noite igual por dentro ao silêncio, Noite
Com as estrelas lentejoulas rápidas
No teu vestido franjado de Infinito.

*

Vem, vagamente,
Vem, levemente,

*

Vem soleníssima,
Soleníssima e cheia
De uma oculta vontade de soluçar,
Talvez porque a alma é grande e a vida pequena,

Vem, lá do fundo
Do horizonte lívido,
Vem e arranca-me
Do solo de angústia e de inutilidade
Onde vicejo.
Apanha-me do meu solo, malmequer esquecido,
Onde estão as cidades de Hoje que eu tanto amei;
Onde estão os mares que os Navegadores abriram;
Que eu sem conhecer adoro;
— Cristo talvez ainda hoje viva,
Onde Deus talvez exista realmente e mandando tudo…

*

*

Umedece interiormente o instante lento e longínquo!

*

*

Quando eu morrer,
Quando me for, ignobilmente, como toda a gente,

Las notas que a lo largo del tiempo ha ido escribiendo Juan Goytisolo han servido para alimentar una obra en la que ha manifestado interés por las más distintas formas de expresión y por el pensamiento (the notes written throughout the time by Juan Goytisolo served to feed an opera that expressed interest for the most varied forms of expression and thought).

An amazing essay by Juan Goytisolo about the relationship between novel, music, and poetry. Witnesses are called in the stand, to give testimony with their work, among others Faulkner (cadence and use of similes), Broch (the concept of novel as a vast poem, his Death of Virgil), Lowry (Under the Volcano, with its dark clouds like swans), Cervantes (if, with rare exceptions, the pre-Cervantes story was like a musical instrument of a single rope, our first writer invented another kind of telling the story, in which various instruments combine harmoniously: the symphonic variations of those that would be imposed much later, in the narrative of the 19th century), Joyce (Ulysses marking a turning point that stamps the expiration date at the repetition of narrative forms of Balzac and Galdós), Valéry (defining the poetry as an oscillation between feeling and sound), Baudelaire (poetry as a range of distinct registers, excluding any rhetoric and didactic), Kundera (shrinking the vocabulary and deepening the syntactic relationship within it), and not only them, also Eliot and San Juan de la Cruz, and Góngora, and others too, and all this within a column in La Cuarta Página del País, shrinking and deepening on the traces of Kundera:

Não tenho ambições nem desejos
Ser poeta não é uma ambição minha
É a minha maneira de estar sozinho.

[I have no ambitions nor desires.
To be a poet is not my ambition,
It's simply my way of being alone.
]

I consider poetry an intermediary stage in the path from music to prose. In prose we talk free. We can include musical rhythms, and nevertheless we continue our process of thinking. We can include poetical rhythms and yet being out of them. An occasional rhythm of verse does not interfere with prose. An occasional rhythm of prose stumbles the verse.

Juan Goytisolo

He got the 2014 Miguel de Cervantes Prize: cuando me dan un premio siempre sospecho de mí mismo; cuando me nombran persona non grata sé que tengo razón (when they give me an award I always get suspicious of myself; when they decalre me persona non grata I know that I am right). Born in Barcelona in an aristocratic family in 1931, rebelled against family and joined in his youth the Communist Party, left for France where he stayed for long years; after his wife passed away in 1996, he moved to Morocco. Él había llegado a Marrakech por primera vez en 1976 para estudiar árabe dialectal y allí surgió en 1980 Makbara, una novela escrita en “verso libre narrativo” que mezcla con toda libertad voces, tiempo y espacio, escatología y erotismo (he had arrived at Marrakech for the first time in 1976 for study the Arabic dialect there and it was the place where in 1980 came Makbara, a novel written in "free narrative verse", mixing in full freedom voices, time and space, eschatology and eroticism).  How could that be, to mix novel and poetry? La novela es un género omnívoro, puede incluir la poesía, pero la poesía no puede incluir la novela (the novel is an omnivorous genre and can include poetry, while poetry cannot include novel). Speaking about his radical positions for the immigrant, for the poor, tanto en París como en Nueva York me había acostumbrado a una sociedad heterogénea; el barrio del Sentier me procuró una educación que ninguna universidad me podía proporcionar: el contacto con migrantes de todas las partes del mundo (in Paris as well as in NY I got accustomed to a heterogeneous society; the neighborhood of Sentier gave me an education that no university could give: the contact with immigrants from all over the world). His best known novel is Count Julian (that takes sides with the man considered conventionally as the ultimate traitor in Spanish history; I have to come back to it some day: the novel challenges the Spanish traditional values). Here is a column about Goytisolo in El País (I quoted from it):

A Biography of Penelope Fitzgerald

Penelope Fitzgerald

She published her first book in her very late fifties. She began it as a hobby. I am not a professional writer, she would say by that time, only very anxious to write one or two things which interest me. If publishing your first book signifies the end of your adolescence, then Penelope Fitzgerald pushed very hard the meaning of juvenilia. Actually she had a hard life, and didn't write till then because she couldn't find time: she had a family to take care of. Later she would say, I'm an old writer who has never been a young one. How are her four novels? Despite the echoes of Beckett and Turgenev, she is also a distinctly English writer, because, she explained, the Englishman considers life not important enough to be tragic and too serious to be comic.

I quoted here abundantly from a review of a biography of Penelope Fitzgerald, authored by Hermione Lee. The review was published in NY Times:

Ernesto Sábato

When he passed away he was less than two month shy of hundred years. Author, visual artist, and physicist, left us three novels (El Túnel, 1948; Sobre héroes y tumbas, 1961; Abaddón el exterminador, 1974) and essays covering metaphysics, politics, and tango.

Ang Lee, the Taiwanese film director who brought to Hollywood a Confucian system of values.

By Confucionizing imagine reintroducing Hollywood to virtues of discipline, diligence, and old-fashioned economy, in both its financial and narrative senses... it means more than a Chinese director who just happens to make films in Hollywood; it is an injection of righteousness into the production process itself, upholding merits of patience, decency, and concern for the entire community and the whole process.

París es teatro divertido y terrible...

A poem in prose by Rubén Darío, the portrait of one of those Parisian poètes maudits, leaving his days and nights in the tapis-franc (the grog-room so to speak, el cuartucho destartalado) of Café Plombier, a buen bebedor de ajenjo (in other words a fine absinthe drinker), never drunk, always dreaming impossible dreams, un caballero del vino triste, impeccable bohemian, with stanzas written on the chalk of the walls there, obsessed with his pájaro azul, the blue bird from his head, painfully dreaming to fly one day... the universe of Verlaine and Rimbaud, and all those pintores, escultores, poetas - sí, ¡todos buscando el viejo laurel verde!, one by one destroyed by that voracious and cruel universe of Paris. A universe like a dream, a dream slipping softly into a nightmare, to become a dream again... le Paris de la Bohème... one day he will pass away, and the pájaro azul will be at last free to fly toward the azure of the sky.

Le Paris de la Bohème, that so many artists have depicted in words, or in colors, or in music. The description of Rubén Darío has a very well contained pathos.

Here is the poem:
