Sloane Merrill Gallery in Boston

Sloane Merrill Gallery on Charles Street in Boston, a gallery that I wish to visit some day. It was founded by Ali Ringenburg, who used to be Director at Principle Gallery in Alexandria, where I have been a regular for many years. Actually Ali came to Principle after I had moved from Northern Virginia, so I haven't had the chance to meet her. Still I continued to keep contact to Principle through eMail, FB and the like, and even I changed some "Internet words" with Ali, so for me a visit to the Sloane Merrill is a must.

(I tried an English translation, that follows the Romanian text)

The Ukrainian government announced yesterday five victims from the separatists. There have been incidents in the morning and toward the afternoon, but after a declaration of Kiev that the government has decided to cease operations at night, life has somehow returned to normal: a few shops were open, the banks are operating, people are trying to go on in kind of natural way.

The access is not free; the filters are still in place where they were yesterday. Several filters have been somehow destroyed by the Ukrainian forces, but some were rebuilt by Russian separatists overnight. On the way to Donetsk there are also Ukrainian filters, and the military presence is quite considerable. The access is quite difficult in the region, each car is controlled. The mobilization of Ukrainian forces is not so impressive, I mean considerable, but they seem better prepared, these are indeed the elite troops sent by Kiev. They seem better prepared and better armed than the separatists, who in turn have the public support here.

Everyone expects Kiev 's statements and these special troops are expected to intervene, the greater stake being Rada building, which is believed to be assaulted by Ukrainian troops in the next 48 hours. Here everyone expects the conflict to continue.

Anthony Loyd

Anthony Loyd

Anthony Loyd is an English war correspondent, currently working for The Times, the author of an astonishing book about his experiences in the Bosnia and Chechnya wars. You can read a good review of that book in  the Books section of NY Times: an article from 2004, with a title (Hooked in Bloodshed) that fits well with the war atmosphere that Loyd caught in a unique way. Well, I gave you the title of the review, but the book's: it's named My War Gone By, I Miss It So. I will talk more about it, for now just a few words: it's about war depravity and about war adrenaline. Nobody is perfectly innocent in a war, nor the perpetrators, the victims neither. Once you are there, you become part of it, and you get addicted. This is in two sentences, the book deserves much more. I hope soon i will have the opportunity to read his second book, Another Bloody Love Letter.

(I tried an English translation, that follows the Romanian text)

A Monday afternoon with a leaden sky in Slovyansk. On the driveway in front of the church there are several military vehicles, many without number plates, all of them being there for only one purpose: to commemorate the comrades, fallen in the night of Easter.

In the hubbub and hype of this event, several journalists (myself included) are approaching one of these cars, filled with people in uniform. Without putting too much hope in a reaction from them, being aware of the emotion of the moment, hesitating to ask anything. Suddenly, in a surprising way, the rear door of this green scarlet car opens, and from inside, a voice hidden behind a mask invites us. Paiahale (come on) the guy urges us. It's a unique opportunity though, having in mind the incidents and attacks against journalists in recent days, we hesitate for a moment. Curiosity and fortune meet in this situation and we have only a few moments to make a decision. We climb. Inside, six individuals in military uniform, armed with machine guns, rifles, pistols, a full stuff. Only one of them (the guy who opened the door) is wearing a hood. The others are crammed in the back seat. Up front, the driver, to his right the brigade commander, a man about fifty, whose authority seems to be obeyed by all. It's crowded this van of Soviet origin.
...

We reach the village where Pavel Pavlenko, the separatist killed in the Easter incident, will be buried. The soldiers get down, orderly and calmly. They stand in line, waiting for the commander's orders. The commander, Yura by name, remains slightly behind, pulling my arm. Tell them, to your Romanians, that we know how hard it is in Europe. Even you Romanians are not doing too great. Donetsk will not have the same fate, I promise youIt's hard to argue while in front of us a full nation is tearing apart, heading again toward the friend of the East.

There is a universe here, of red and chestnut, of stools and tables, of bricks, and the sidewalk, and the lady in the distance, and the announcements on display on the wall of the restaurant. Each of them has a function: some to give comfort to this universe, the others to show its relativity.

Anti-Piketty (Robert J. Samuelson Speaking)

no copyright infringement intended

Today a new op-ed questioning Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century. It's in Washington Post. This time the critics come from Robert J. Samuelson. The fact that two respected conservative columnists write about the book of Piketty, questioning its conclusions, is a clear sign that the book is actually very important and must be read.

The article of Mr. Samuelson begins with a tough question: Is Class Warfare Justified? It presents the book of Piketty, and its context and concludes that though the present concentration of income and wealth instinctively feels excessive, and it understandably stirs resentment, so we’d be better off if the rich were less so and other Americans were more so, however it’s doubtful that political action to force this transformation would be similarly beneficial, because class warfare would degrade the confidence needed for a stronger recovery.

So, Is Class Warfare Justified? My humble opinion: the book of Piketty is not about class warfare - it's about math.

Here is the article of Robert J. Samuelson:

Anti-Piketty (Ross Douthat Speaking)

I Told Ya I Was Right
(De Leporibus et Ranis)
no copyright infringement intended

I've read in today's NY Times an op-ed questioning Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century. Somehow paradoxically it called in my mind Anti-Dühring, the famous (some would say infamous, it's up 2 u) book of Engels. Should I call the op-ed of Ross Douthat as Anti-Piketty? Making such an association would make my leftist friends get insane (or make them consider me insane, whichever comes first). Of course, Anti-Dühring is a very solid book covering philosophy, political economy and socialism  (you could read it onLine by clicking here), while the op-ed of Ross Douthat is just an op-ed. Toutes proportions gardées.

The title of the op-ed is Marx Rises Again (which sounds kind of polemic, to put it mildly). For Mr. Douthat, the recent book of Piketty offers no more no less than the narrative for the 21th century Marxian revival, its point being that the so-called free markets, by their nature, tend to enrich the owners of capital at the expense of people who own less of it: the enrichment of the one percent on the expense of the ninety-none percent.

Mr. Douthat, disagrees with Piketty's theory. For him, even as the rich have gotten much, much richer, the 99 percent have shared in growing prosperity in real, measurable ways. And also, even if what happens today might prove the Marxian idea of everything solid melting into air, actually what’s felt to be evaporating could turn out to be cultural identity — family and faith, sovereignty and community — much more than economic security.

And Mr. Douthat concludes, somewhere in this pattern, perhaps, lies the beginnings of a  more ideologically complicated critique of modern capitalism — one that draws on cultural critics like Daniel Bell and Christopher Lasch rather than just looking to material concerns, and considers the possibility that our system’s greatest problem might not be the fact that it lets the rich claim more money than everyone else. Rather, it might be that both capitalism and the welfare state tend to weaken forms of solidarity that give meaning to life for many people, while offering nothing but money in their place.

It smells like social conservatism, you'd say, and you could be right. Anyway Ross Douthat doesn't make a secret of his conservative convictions.  However, the importance of the cultural dimension is not the monopoly of the rightist thinkers. Think at Gramsci.

I will come back to the book of Piketty, Capital in the Twenty-First Century. For now, I invite you to read the article of Mr Douthat:

Slovyansk (excerpts from the blog of Mircea Barbu)

Slaviansk, unde oamenii sărbătoresc Paştele printre patrule
(Slavyansk, where people celebrate the Easter among patrols)
(source: blog Mircea barbu din Adevărul)

(I tried an English translation, that follows the Romanian text)

Among the military filters along the road to Slovyansk, in the rumble of helicopters flying over the region, the civilians are preparing themselves to celebrate Easter. The stores are open just a few hours daily, the banks have been closed for several days, and only a few ATMs can be used. The town hall is still occupied by armed pro-Russian forces. Also the local police headquarters and several other strategic points .

On the way downtown, the few people that dare to get out have different opinions on the recent events. Most people do not agree. I'd say that the support for the pro-Russian forces lays somewhere in the 30%. The problem is that the rest of us do not protest . We 're scared . We have families, children ...

Not the same with the people gathered outside the police station. They cook or bring food constantly for the guys barricaded inside. And they visibly are not content that too much emphasis is put on the support from Moscow. We are not Russians, just local people, and we are supporting these forces with our own money, says Yelizaveta, a young woman of 22.

Mariupol (excerpts from the blog of Mircea Barbu)

(Mariupol: police patrols, and very few people on the streets)
(source: blog Mircea Barbu din Adevărul)

(I tried an English translation, that follows the Romanian text)

Mariupol, estul Ucrainei.

Mariupol, eastern Ukraine . The downtown looks like after a siege. Police patrols, and very few people on the streets of a city on the verge of Easter.

Two nights ago, the Ukrainian military base, located minutes from the town hall, was stormed by about 500 protesters waving Russian flags. The incident left at least one person dead and several dozen demonstrators injured or arrested . Despite Geneva statements, where foreign ministers of the United States, Russia, and Ukraine have decided the disarmament of all paramilitary militia, this morning the main buildings of Mariupol were still occupied by protesters.

The town hall is housing the command center of the protesters. Inside, in a relatively calm atmosphere, among sleeping bags and mattresses, several activists are organizing press conferences, assure the security of the building, do the cooking, and plan the next steps.

A few steps away it's an Ukrainian military base. In the yard, a few soldiers are busy fixing a truck. These were the longest days of my life. I was not afraid of the protesters , rather at the thought that innocent people would die, said an Ukrainian private who did not wish to be named . Bullet holes on neighboring buildings confirm his words.

Firstly came a delegation of local women. They asked us to surrender and join them . Obviously we refused. Then came armed individuals that burned the building entrance and managed to tear down the gate. We initially fired warning shots but then we were ordered to open fire, the private said.

With a population of about half a million, Mariupol is one of the most important industrial centers in the Donetsk oblast. The population, although Russian speaking, remains somewhat divided and equally shared in this conflict. A city by the Azov Sea, just a few dozen kilometers from the border with the Russian Federation.

Holly Week

It's Holly Week, the road through thorns and cross from Hosanna to Hallelujah. I'm thinking at my friends from Clarendon, the Presbyterian Community there, the Wee Kirk, as they liked to call themselves. Says David Ensign, their pastor, I hope you'd find time to pause this week, to meditate the passion, in its complexity and messiness, chasing the money changers out of the temple; the foot washing before the Last Supper; the solitary watch of the garden; the bewilderment of betrayal; the deep denial; the agony of the cross and the silence of the tomb. And I remember the years I was living near Clarendon, far away from my country Romania, thinking at my friends and relatives, at the Eastern Orthodox ways of walking through the Greater Week of the Lent. Our traditions and our rituals may differ, the substance is the same.

[Maria Iliuţ inherited the song firstly from birds and springs. As a small girl she was shepherding the flocks high in the mountains near Crasna, a town from Stefan's times. Fear of wolves made her sing all day long, hoping that way to scare the beasts]

Bucovina

Korolenko: The Blind Musician (Слепой музыкант)

Korolenko published his Слепой музыкант in 1886: the story of a blind boy gradually overcoming the handicap by opening his inner to the beauty and harshness of life: contacting more and more intimately the reality in what's just natural and just challenging, befriending reality, assuming it - opening his soul like opening his eyes. A boy born into an upper class family some part in the huge Russian Empire, as huge as nothing else seems to exist anywhere (actually that part where the boy was born was Ukraine, the same as the birthplace of Korolenko himself, who masterfully manages the everyday talk in the novel to continuously slip back and forth between Russian and Ukrainian).

The overbearing presence of the mother marking the boy's first years. Fortunately an uncle being there and balancing the picture, taking great care of the boy, leading him slowly toward independence - an uncle being now an old crippled man, while preserving the determination and great heart of his young years, his revolutionary past in the detachments of Garibaldi.

The boy discovering his out of ordinary musical gift. Then a girl from nearby, befriending the boy, the two going on throughout childhood and adolescence, developing their bond.

It was not enough for the boy to become a guy of his own. Challenged by his uncle, he leaves home and joins a band of blind musicians, traveling with them from place to place, enduring good and bad weather, good and bad experiences, meeting the good and the wrong guys, the good and the wrong places. After a while the boy returns, now an accomplished man and accomplished musician.

A movie was made based on the book, in 1960. I watched it in those years; I was a teenager. I found recently a copy on youTube. So I watched it for the second time in my life, now that I'm in my late sixties. I enjoyed it again, though maybe the actors are a bit too pathetic sometimes, or maybe it's just difficult to create the movie counterpart for a good book. I found then an English translation of the novel, published in 1891:

Aline Delano (the English translator of the book) tells us  that Korolenko built the characters of this novel starting from three real cases: a blind girl whom he had known as a child; a boy, a pupil of the author, losing gradually his sight, and a professional musician, blind since his birth, intellectually gifted, scholarly, and refined. It is a fascinating example of the way the real characters (the raw material so to speak) are transformed throughout the process of creation, how their singularities are shifted, unified, separated.

Vasile Alecsandri

Vasile Alecsandri
