Puesto and Its Various Meanings

alezzzix (Alex de Venezuela): Puesto is short for puesto de trabajo, which is a job, also we use it as a synonymous for asiento (seat). For the position a person plays on a team we use posición, you could say puesto and it would be understandable but not common. For locations of events one could use asiento (only if there is a place to sit), lugar or puesto. Puesto also works for a stand, for instance, a hot dog stand would be a puesto de perros calientes. There is also the conjunction puesto que that means because / since / due to, for instance, since you did not come, I had to study by myself, this means puesto que no viniste, tuve que estudiar solo.

Doctorow

His parents (kind of social democrats old fashion) named him after Edgar Allan Poe; as a child he was reading as much as he could; eventually he started to be interested not only in what was to happen, but how was that done; so he became a writer, one of the most important American novelists of the past century (wiki); his novels situate fictional characters in recognizable historical contexts, among identifiable historical figures and often within unconventional narrative forms (nyt); he articulated the American darkness as well as any writer ever has - hubris, greed, stupidity around race and class — but this awareness of darkness vibrated alongside a deep optimism, a fascination with the beauty and genius of the American experiment (newyorker); Ragtime, World’s Fair, Billy Bathgate, The Book of Daniel, and Loon Lake constitute his essential list (Entertainment Weekly).

Aman, pictorul începuturilor epocii moderne a ţării acesteia.

Himera Văzduhului, cea a Pământului, cea a Apei, cea a Nopţii...

Usted decide :)

Cardinal Martini - His Final Interview

The church is tired, in the Europe of well-being and in America. Our culture has become old, our churches and our religious houses are big and empty, the bureaucratic apparatus of the church grows, our rites and our dress are pompous.

Bucharest Opera on Strike

Andrei Rădulescu-Banu: The Bucharest Opera, in all its glory - but the show is cancelled. The short gist of it: ballet director got fired by conductor (but with ethnic overtones, because the ballet director is Dane, the conductor Romanian). The curtain stays closed, the singers are in the audience, asking for higher salaries and for a shot to be allowed on stage. Listen to them sing the Hebrew Slaves Chorus from Nabucco, by Verdi. We hoped to see instead Falstaff, by the same Verdi - supposedly one of the most comedic opera roles written. Instead, the joke is on us.

Arnold Wesker

My first encounter with the name of Arnold Wesker was sometime in the 60's. I was a teenager, living in a Communist country that was beginning slowly and cautiously to open just a little bit toward the Western world. Naturally I was very eager to understand as much as I could about life beyond the Iron Curtain. About their way of life, about their own challenges, about their universe of ideas. A book published in that period exercised a huge influence on me. Unfortunately I don't remember any more its title, nor the name of its author (who was a Romanian theatrologist). I still have the book: it is somewhere in my home library, well hidden behind other and other books that were added throughout the years.

The book was about the contemporary British and American theater. I read it very carefully trying to absorb every word from it. It happened that at about the same time I found an article about the contemporary British cinema, in Horizons (the only international magazine having in those years also a Romanian edition). And so I learned about the angry young men and about the kitchen sink drama, about John Osborne and his Look Back in Anger, Arnold Wesker and his Chips with Everything, Harold Pinter and his Birthday Party, Shelagh Delaney and his Taste of Honey, Alan Sillitoe and his Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. From the article in Horizons I learned about the free cinema, about Tony Richardson and Lindsay Anderson. Soon after I had the opportunity to watch at the cinematheque some of their movies, based on the plays of the angry young men: my first meeting with Richard Harris, Rita Tushingham and Tom Courtenay.

And then some of these plays started to be put on stage in Bucharest. In my mind, the generation of British angry men mingles with my own generation of Bucharest directors and actors, Liviu Ciulei and all the others.

Arnold Wesker passed away two days ago. He was 85. And I understand, once more, that their generation was the backbone for my understanding of the modern world, of its ways and its challenges. Then my understanding evolved, I had to learn about many other things and I had to pass through many other experiences. But the moment of beginning was there, in the book where I learned about the theater of anger, about Osborne and Wesker.

(source: Anagrama)
no copyright infringement intended

Each short story written by Raymond Carver is life-in-progress. No beginning, no climax, no end, just several moments taken from a continuum lived in mediocrity and accepted with dull resignation. Now and then some memorable phrase, thrown there just to mock yourself. There is a thick desperation in the air, hidden below chatter and drinking. Minimalism at its best.

History began when humans invented gods and will end when humans become gods. So starts his web site. Well, this guy has the appetite for constructing shocking sentences (to put it mildly). And anyway, if we want to talk about scientists who know how to sell their ideas, seemingly he is a case in point. I bought today his Brief History of Humankind (Sapiens): about five hundred pages and it cannot be left from hand, presumably up to the last page. I stopped just to write a few lines about the author here, then I go back to the book. I'm reading it with passion, also with some uneasiness: I generally agree with his views, or at least I think they deserve full consideration, it's something else that I dislike there. I know it sounds strange what I'm saying, because this is a book that takes the whole history of humankind (prehistory included - he likes better another term for prehistory - but let's not digress now). But this book gives somehow a feel of pro-domo. Maybe this video below will give you a better idea of his way of presenting ideas:

Beggars and Christ

Universo de Riso
no copyright infringement intended

Adeus!

It happens to me quite often to be stopped on the street by all kind of beggars. They always start by asking for a very small amount of money just to buy a loaf of bread or something. Try to offer them bread instead of money and you'll see what happens. Try to give them attention and you'll see that the small amount of money was just the beginning. Frankly I almost never stop to give them money, as I keep in mind several situations when I was cheated  big. But sometimes I think what would Christ have done. You see, beyond drugs, booze, cheating, and all of the like, these beggars are losers. And God loves losers. And I wonder if  we, all the others, are not losers, too - in our case just by the fact that we think we're superior to them. So, what to do? I always postpone the answer. It's hard to be God.

Conversations about Race: Asian-Americans

Asian-Americans in the Argument (Ethan Bronner)
(source: NY Times)

Racial experiences in America. The way race is usually discussed does not reflect the vast range of experiences of discrimination and opportunity in this country. Need is to embrace diverse voices — and also to work harder to understand and dismantle the biases that persist around. An Op-Doc about the Asian-American specific experience shows the way these people approach such difficult themes, from a position of both vulnerability and strength (more in: NY Times: A Conversation With Asian-Americans on Race).

A Conversation With Asian-Americans on Race
(NY Times Op-Doc)

A few words about Geeta Gandbhir and Michèle Stephenson, the directors of this Op-Doc.

Geeta Gandbhir is a film editor and film director, who won two Emy's for her work; she co-directed four documentaries so far: Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr. in 2014 (a painter obscured by the pop-art movement chronicled here by his contemporaries and by his own son, Robert de Niro - I must confess with pride of being one of those happy few who saw some of his paintings, in a cine club in Tribeca) - Pupies behind Bars in 2014 (the story of four inmates who have committed crimes against society, four veterans who have given their livelihoods to protect their country, and the second chance that they are each given through the love of a puppy) - A Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers in 2015 (three women in an all female, predominantly Muslim unit of police officers sent to post-earthquake Haiti as UN Peacekeepers for one year) - The Conversation (in post-production); I found an interview taken to her in Nirali magazine.

Michèle Stephenson is a filmmaker and human rights activist focused on telling stories about communities that have been neglected by the mainstream media and contributing this way to the American narrative mosaic (wiki); she directed four movies so far: Faces of Change in 2005 (five people from five continents tell how they face racism and discrimination in their respective communities) -Slaying Goliath in 2008 (a charged look at 10 days in the life of a boy's fifth grade basketball club from Harlem, New York) - Coming Home: The Dry Storm in 2010 (in the wake of Hurricane Katrina the New Orleans City Council decides to demolish public housing leaving thousands of people without homes; staging a courageous battle that reminds us of how much home means to us all, residents became activists, attracting the attention of international human rights monitors) - American Promise in 2013 (an intimate documentary following the 12-year journey of two African-American families pursuing the promise of opportunity through the education of their sons; it won a special jury prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival); an interesting discussion about American Promise in the Huffington Post.

As soon as I find more movies of these two filmmakers to watch them I will come back.

Aimara

no copyright infringement intended

He encontrado pronto una réplica mezclando poesía hermosa y sutil ironía:

Swimming in endless circles in Lake Wobegon, the old duck sensed winter's approach, the cooler air, the shorter days, the leaves falling along the shore. It was a brilliant day, his reflection crisp in the crystalline water. Suddenly overcome with melancholy for the many seasons past, and the few to come, he quietly quacked, ¡La soledad es un espejo!

Ricardo Arjona, La Soledad Soy Yo

no copyright infringement intended
