Paco Souto, Amado Xonás

saímos á noite
por comer do escuro canta luz
quixemos posuír
carne de auga eramos mar abaixo
voces de lúa
pegando aínda
no farol de proa
na gamela enchida de florestas
dedos eramos
polos precipicios da carne
aonde caer obsesivamente moribundos
acesos surtidores de balea
iniciaron nas ondas vixiantes
aquela sorte de naufraxio voluntario
como morremos entón Xonás
na boca enorme do pecado
(fuente: e-Cain)

Pushkin, Approaching Izhora (Подъезжая под Ижоры)

It was the January of 1829. Pushkin was visiting acquaintances in the Tver province, bringing with him some Petersburgian atmosphere, a certain style, a bit of variety (oн принес в наше общество немного разнообразия, as someone later would remember).

And there he met Katya. Was she an absolute beauty? That's always hard to state, you know, but certainly she had her beauties. Her eyes were wonderful, her movements were slim, her stature was light,  And she was in her blossoming years, full of freshness and of that je ne sais quoi melting any male heart.

No wonder that the poet fell charmed and started to imagine some wonderful stances, while drawing the sweet profile on the manuscripts.

But he had to control his effusions. His heart was already belonging to Goncharova, the woman who would become his wife and tragically mark his destiny. So the resulting poem is a masterpiece of lyrical enthusiasm balanced by some self-irony: love elegantly dominated by a sense of the relative.

(As for Katya, after a few years she married a cavalry officer, seemingly dumb and indecently jealous, whose unique passion was riding goats or something)

I hardly found an English translation, made by Rupert Moreton.

When approaching River Inger
Glance did I at azure skies,
And recalled your gaze’s linger
And your wondrous deep blue eyes.
And although I was enchanted
Sadly by you, virgin fair,
And although an exile planted
Somewhere in the depths of Tver,
Dared I not to make prostration,
Lay before you all my cares,
Nor to cause you consternation
With my dim enamoured prayers.
Dreadfully inebriated
By the hops of worldly show,
I’ll forget, intoxicated,
How your lovely features glow,
And your poise and slender motion
And the care in all you say,
Calm, displayed without a notion,
Knowing laugh and glance’s stray.
And if not, this path I’ll follow
To your peaceful native parts,
Reappear like the swallow,
Love until November starts.

versión original, en gallego

escribo
en folla impar
as tres cuartas partes
xustas
de min mesmo
a man acenando o universo
a viaxe impar de virme paradentro
escribo tolo
un sexto apenas da ousadía
do que calo
inspiro
e dialógome
o meu mundo sempre será varios
(fuente: e Caín)

traducción en español

escribo
en una hoja impar
las tres cuartas partes
justas
de mí mismo
agitando a mano el universo
el extraño viaje de irme para dentro
escribo loco
un gesto apenas de osadía
de lo que callo
me inspiré

The New Babylon, 1929

Written and directed by Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg, The New Babylon (Новый Вавилон) is a Soviet silent movie from 1929, dedicated to the Paris Commune. A tragic story of love (somehow calling in mind Zola's Débâcle - here in the movie the two lovers are in opposite camps) - only it's treated very quickly, as there are many other events to be presented. An out-pour of things, that happened in the Paris of 1871 - things big scale and things small scale - all dramatically important to understand what happened. There is a Revolutionary pathos in the movie, only it is created very differently from what Eisenstein and the other masters of the epoch were doing. Here in The New Babylon the artistic technique is the one used by street performers or circus jugglers. You have to watch the movie to understand this. It's the Constructivist vanguard of the 20's, however of a special flavor: the eccentrism.

Shostakovich wrote a score for this movie, a musical composition with a long history of its own, lost after the premiere and retrieved only after the composer's death in 1975. Maybe this score can be of help in understanding the artistic universe of the movie. Shostakovich was by that time an ardent partisan of eccentrism, aiming to dissolve the borders between music-hall, circus, theatre, movie, opera, and here he used motifs from Revolutionary songs (Marseillaise, Ça Ira, Carmagnole) in unexpected forms (can-can, waltz, gallop), sometimes juxtaposed contrapuntally with very different themes, to get the necessary artistic effect.

The cast includes Vsevolod Pudovkin, Sergei Gerasimov, and Tamara Makarova, among many others.
